Take a coach to the historical city of Coventry; a city, like London, that is steeped in famous historical places and stories. One such story is the tale of Lady Godiva, who rode through the town naked on horseback to protest a rise in taxes. Visit the clock in the arch over Hertford Street and you will see her figure emerge when it strikes the hour. You can also see her life-size statue on horseback in Broadgate.
Visit the West Orchard Shopping Centre on Smithford Way for designer clothes, and the exciting Coventry Market on Queen Victoria Road with over 170 stalls to explore, all under a striking circular roof.
The city centre is fabulous; much of it is closed to cars, and is dotted with beautiful parks, very much like London. The skyline is famous for the bombed out remains of the medieval cathedral, where in 1940 a single air raid levelled the whole city centre. The ruined cathedral is preserved as a reminder of Coventry's stalwart resilience in WW2, and now a canopied porch connects the cathedral ruins to its modern successor designed by Sir Basil Spence in 1962. See it for yourself, in between the shops and the cafes.
Don't miss Greyfriars Walk with the Bull Yard, famous for it's chic boho restaurants and cafes, or the world famous Transport Museum in the city centre. Entry is completely free and you can see the world's largest collection of British road transport, including the British Land Speed Record holder at 760 mph, the ThrustSSC. Experience breaking the sound barrier for yourself in the ThrustSSC Simulator.
